Okay, before you read, let me tell you that i will go into detail so that i can let you know what is going on. DONT read if you dont want to hear.. Here's the story. I have been on and off the Depo Shot for about 3 years now. Everything has been fine. But, about 3 months ago, my period went crazy on me. I have extremely heavy, prolonged bleeding. I went to the ER because the bleeding was so heavy. They told me it was just 'breakthrough' bleeding caused by the Depo Shot. I guess that could be it, but why would it just now happen after almost 3 years? Anyways, i went home and rested like they told me too. But, for the last month, the bleeding has gotten worse. Its so heavy that it goes throught a tampon & pad in less than 1 hour sometimes. I have been passing clots everytime i bleed, some are really big. I constantly have cramps/back pain. Sometimes, the bleeding will completely stop for a few hours.Let me add more details before i run outta room....

I can tell when the bleeding is about to start again, because i will get sharp cramps. Not even 20 minutes after i feel the cramps, i get the extrememly heavy bleeding. This has been going on for about 1 month now. Its starting to interfer with my life because i have to stop what im doing and lay down. I personally think its more than just the Depo Shot like the doctor said. But i have no idea what else it could be, so im asking for adivce. I dont want to go back to the doctor without knowing what else it could be first.

I used to have periods that heavy every month, so it might not just be because of the shot. You definitely need to talk to a doctor - not ER - about this issue. There might be some tests needed. Good luck.

Go to the doctor. You could have a multitude of problems, but anytime you bleed through a pad or tampon that quickly, plus having clots, you run a risk of having a serious problem. My mom went through years, and her stupid doctor just told her to wait till menapause. She changed doctors and that doctor insisted she have a hystorectomy because she was losing so much blood. She became very anemic and her new doctor informed her that losing so much blood could lead to so many other problems. (No worries, If she was younger a hystorectomy probably wouldn't have been the course of action.) The cause of her bleeding problems stemmed from cysts, fibroids, and hormonal imbalances do to other medications she was on.

My sister bleeds like crazy becaues she has fibroids. This bleeding lessoned when she was on the Depo shot, (which by the way, I have a lovely neice thanks to that Depo Shot...don't trust it!) So you could have fibroid issues.

Definately see a doctor, and don't let them tell you that excessive bleeding is acceptable. It is not. Even if it is normal, and not life threatening. Just cause you are a female, and bleed once a month doesn't mean you should be miserable because of it. My mother is adament about this cause she suffered for years because the doctor she went to made her feel like she was overreacting. If you don't get an acceptable answer get another doctor!
Good Luck!

Hello Mum & Dad, You say you have been on & off this Depo shot for about 3 years. On & off has got me wondering if you could have been possibly pregnant before you had the last shot. Bleeding for this length of time accompanied with back pain & cramps sounds to me you maybe or may have misscarried. If an incomplete misscarriage is the reason for this happening infection can set in and cause all sort of problems. Go back to the doctor & have a full check up, you may need a D & C to get things cleaned up & back to normal. Good luck

well my mom had the same thing when she was 18...(she told me) i really think that you should see another doctor that is not breakthrough bleeding. When my mom had that she found out that there was a tumor on her ovary....and she was passing huge clots out of her vagina....and it got really serious and she had to take chemotherapy. Im 16 and havent seen a gyn yet and i believe i should see one because i could inherit that problem too. I dont meen to scare you but i really suggest that u consult another doctor for that because the other doctor doesn't know what he is talking about. I sure hope this helped u u can emaill me sometimes if you have anymore questions. As you can see i am very mature for my age and i'm pretty sure that i can help u out. I'm reading up on things like this because i am very interested in the human body and hopefully i will become a doctor when i get a little older. ~Good Luck~

You need to see your doctor, it could be an infection or cyst but it isn't normal and needs immediate attention. The shot may have brought it on but you will need meds to fix it. This is one of the reasons I don't like the shots or those only 4 periods a year products. No one realizes how bad the side effects will be lately on. It isn't normal to change the way a period is suppose to work normally, you mess with the natural cycle and you mess it up big time. Also, this could be early premeno, caused by the shot.

If something is causing this to happen you should ask yourself if this is right for you. There are so many other forms of b.c. Is it really hard to take a pill everyday or just slap on a good old condom? If my body had that kind of reaction I would stop it immediately. The doc is going to say its normal, but if its so normal than your body would have been doing that all along. Remember the doc works hand and hand with the pharmacutical companies so they will encourage you to continue no matter the hell you are going through. I heard there was some lawsuit forming against that crap your taking anyways.

I think its about time you see your GP, and demand to see a gynaecologist. You may need a referral to gynaecologist.

The bleeding needs to be stopped as soon as possible, especially if you have been bleeding for more than two weeks in the month, you may only need a D & C (Dilation and Curette) which is day procedure in hospital. Your also in danger of becoming seriously anemic, which needs to be checked with blood tests.

Good luck

I would go see your doctor, the ob gyn/family doc not the ER. Also you may want to consider another method of birth control, usually you aren't supposed to be on depo for more than 2 years. It can also weaken your bones.

Go to a doctor right away. I had a friend that had this problem and you can get severe iron deficiancies from it. That doctor was an idiot-go see someone else.
