Matched pairs of transistors are used in balanced circuits such as differential input amplifiers, push-pull drivers, etc. Ideally, the transistors have exactly the same electrical characteristics, but primarily they are matched for hfe (sometimes called beta, forward current gain) and Vbe (base-emitter voltage drop.
