if you are in a hole and you dig a new hole inside it are you making a new hole or are you making the first hole bigger????

Since there is no defined shape for "a hole", and no specification as to where you can dig a hole, either interpretation is completely valid.

A parallel question might be, "can you make a little pile of sand on top of a bigger pile of sand?". I'd be inclined to say yes. On the other hand, it would be just as valid to consider the small pile a part of the larger pile.
