If you just got the piercing recently then it may be normal. Otherwise you probably have an infection (if it is red around the site then you definitely do). If you do have an infection then you need to clean the area with alcohol, peroxide (though this and beta dine could stain your ring and skin), etc (I recommend Bactine because it doesn't sting, the only problem is that the others work a little better). Do this multiple times a day. It would probably be best if you took out the ring first (if you can) and then irrigate the piercing with one of the products. By moving the ring up and down you are also irritating the area which is probably moving some plasma around (which could be the puss). Salt water will not do as much as the products I mentioned (and will likely sting more) and DO NOT use antibiotic creams/gels. Antibiotic creams and gels (like Neosporin) can trap bacteria because the consistency of the product does not allow it to penetrate the wound fully. Then the bacteria have a nice warm and humid area to grow in (your piercing) and can infect your system through the bloodstream. Neosporin is good for things like burns and shallow, minor scrapes.
Of course this is just from a medical perspective and some information I have gathered from 3 of my friends that have loads of piercings (2 of which have navel piercings).
If it gets worse and starts to get inflamed then see a doctor.

well I have had my belly button pierced 3 times and the first 2 times my belly button did the same as yours. It is not good if it is letting out puss that means it is infected. My problem was that I cant wear fake jewelry, I had to buy a 14k gold plated belly button ring. Some people just cant Handel certain medals in there body's after a piercing! What you can try to do is switch it out with a real gold(white or yellow) ring and be sure to clean it well. If it doesnt start to look better in a couple of days I would suggest taking it out and letting it heal up. If not then it is going to get really infected and hurt really bad, and could scar you

I can't speak for other people but this was totally normal for me. I had a belly ring in for 3 years straight and I had small to moderate amounts of puss almost every single day. Some days were worse than others and on a couple days (literally) I was prefectly fine.
Of course I cleaned the area every day with gentle soap and water but sometimes I also used peroxide and more often I wiped rubbing alcohol on the ring itself with a Q-tip and then moved the ring back and forth. It never looked bad but once and a while it was a little red. It never smelled bad either but if it had I would have seen a doctor.

It's infected. Any time your body is oozing puss it's trying to tell you something. Oozing puss isn't normal. If you have to ask the question I think you may instinctively know what direction the answer is. Never be afraid to ask though, like a Dr. if it gets worse after you take it out and treat it with alcohol. I'm not talking about pouring a shot of Jack Daniels or a beer on it. You know what I mean? LOL

Do not, under any circumstances use anti-bacterial ointments like Neosporin. These contain petroleum jelly which can make things worse. The suggestion to mix Betadine with anti-bacterial soap is fine, but completely un-necessary. Straight Betadine will be fine. It may burn a bit, but it does not damage tissue like Isopropyl Alcohol. Taking the jewelry out at this point is not recommended due to the possibility of the outer holes closing, which would not allow the puss a way to drain. If that happens, you wind up with a nasty abcess that will have to be cut open, cleaned and packed for about a week. This tends to leave a nasty scar.
So...cleanse thouroughly several times a day with soap and water, rinsing well to make sure you get all the soap out. If you have access to or can afford Hibicleanse, use instead of soap. It is a pre-surgical scrub. After rinsing, dry with clean towel. Finally, apply Betadine to a Q-Tip or cotton swab. Do not dip Q-Tip into Betadine. Cover your jewlery with Betadine and rotate or slide back and forth. Re-apply Betadine as necessary to make sure you get good coverage inside. Allow the Betadine to airdry. It forms a barrier against bacteria.
I know it seems like a tedious task, but as an ER Nurse and someone with plenty of piercings, I can tell you this works. I had one of my nipples get infected after a stretching. Doing the above had is cleared up in a few days.
Good luck.

Hey,
when I got my belly button ring it did that for the first couple of months too. My Piercer told me to get a saline solution (and no, contact solution doesn't work) and take some cotton swabs to clean the ring with it.
I didn't take the ring out, I just moved up and down while cleaning the mess around it and on it. I did this twice a day, and when I took a shower I made sure I used mild soap when cleaning my ring. Hope this helps!

It is close to normal coz when u have a piercing the area gets ripe and puss starts to come out. Even ive got this puss problem for my pierced eyebrows. There's a very handy method to dry the fuss up.
Take some mustard oil...heat it till it boils, after the temparaturegoe down to mild warm state(not absolutely cold) apply it to ur piecring. Make sure the oil goes through ur piercing.

girl you need to get some betadine and mix it with an anti bacterial soap like dial and apply it daily. It sure stinks and the betadine can stain if your not careful but it does the trick. Just keep the mxture in the shower and use it daily. Belly rings do take a long time to heal so just be patient. It should heal after your infection is gone.

From what it sounds like, you probably have an infection.
Go see a doctor immediately! Don't wait any longer or it can get really nasty. I don't it would be smart to take out the ring. Clean it and make a doctor's appointment ASAP!
Good Luck!
