everymonth a women releases eggs from her ovaries into the uterus. a lining of blood and tissue form along the edges of the uterus. the egg sits in the uterus for 2 weeks. if the egg is not fertalizied by then, the lining is not needed, nor is the egg. so, the blood comes out from the vaginal opening and this is called menstrual flow. when the egg comes out, (yes it does, it comes out as a liquidy substance) it is called vaginal discharge. why we get our periods however i think is because women reproduce. in order to reproduce, their needs to be an egg present. in terms of getting pregnent, when there is an egg in a womens uterus, she is 'fertile' meaning she is able to get pregnant. this is why and who we get periods.

Ah, Todd B, welcome to Y!Answers. This is your first question? You should talk to someone you trust.
If you are serious, when girls start ovulating, meaning their ovary puts out an egg, the egg goes to the uterus and gets all comfy cozy on the inside of the uterus, surrounded and protected by a cushion of blood. If the egg doesnt get fertilized by some boy's eager little sperm, then in time, the egg is released, along with the blood, which results in a period.
The egg, which can be considered potentially half of a baby, needs the potentially other half of the baby which is the sperm, to cause a whole baby to begin to form. Stay away. Glad you asked Todd. Tell your buddies and no one will be a DAD before they graduate 8th grade.

It is part of the natural and normal human reproductive cycle which occurs in 28 day (on the average) cycles throughout the fertile years of most women's lives. The menstruation is the part of the cycle which removes the tissue from the womb that would have received and implanted a feritilized ovum had such an event occurred.

The period help pass the egg along out of the ovaries so the sperm can have a way at accessing it. The period is basically a way of telling the female body she is really to reproduce.

First sign of becoming a woman, you have to have periods in order to become pregnant and have a family.
This was passed down years ago from EVE child bearing was her punishment from GOD for eating from the garden of Eden.

How old are you and how do you not know this? But, in your defense I guess, I am embarassed by the number of women who have responded to this question who seem to have even less of clue as to why they menstruate than you.
In short, what we specifically refer to as a "period" is the monthly shedding of the uterine lining which is of no use to a woman unless she is pregnant since it is where the fertilized egg embeds itself and from which it derives its nutrients as it begins to undergo mitosis.

I think it is to release excess iron in the system. Women get heart disease and other illnesses ten to twenty years later than men. I think menses protects femalehealth until menopause, when women become just as sick as men do.
