As an ex-brickie, i had to give it up with wear and tear to my back, but if you get a top training and know all about arches, bulls-eye windows, learning the plans everything, it can be a good life but the weather if it's bad can affect your earnings, if i was starting over i would go for a electricians training. I don't think the training you get in the army helps if you go back to civie street.

It really all depends on whether you think you can handle the discipline in the Army. Bear in mind that you will have some jumped-up Rupert screaming in your boat the whole time and will have to stress about how high a coin can bounce off your bed sheets. If you can stand all that crap you will learn a lot more and will experience loads. Bricklaying is a good trade but there seem to be very few apprentice jobs around nowadays.

Good luck whatever you choose to do x

Follow your heart......do you want an exciting job like the army where different things could happen every day or do you want a job like bricklaying where you will be doing the same kind of things everyday.

Just beware in the army you gf/bf may not like it when u get posted to random places, but you get to travel and you could train for a trade while being payed!

Good luck with whatever you choose

it's a serious time to be thinking about joining the army, man... even if you join up today you're guaranteed a visit to Iraq or Afghanistan before we're out of there. A choice like that should not be a choice of profession, it should be a calling.

If you really are thinking about profession rather than calling, then yes go into the trades. I'd suggest going as high up the brainbox tree as you think your abilities will carry you, which would mean you'd choose plumbing over plastering, for example. Note I'm suggesting you base it on ability, not school qualifications. I know lots of very clever people with nary a grade to their names. Whatever you've got in talent, don't waste it. If you're willing to work hard, be honest and learn, you'll have a very nice income for all of your working life (except the very beginning, which will be sh1t, but hey).

oh yeah - and nearly everyone has met someone who's done time in the services and left, and found it very hard to get started on anything else. I'm not convinced the army knows how to set up its leavers for civilian life. it will be a challenge.

Good luck

Join the army if you want to get shot for someone elses argument over land that you'll never own a part of, or ideology that you don't even believe in.

Otherwise I'd recommend the bricklaying. At least you won't get bummed by your own workmates.

You sound thick. The army's for you

Sorry pal. If you are keen on the forces then look at the Raf and the Navy as well as the Army. Also remember that bricklayers will always be there when you come out of the forces.

A trade. The army training is awful, it's all about being treated like a dog and humilliated to a point that you have no self worth so when they throw you on the front line you don't care if you die or not. I dread my children wanting that when the grow up.

hi, why you need to put life changing descisions on here????
The question is do you have the killer instinct or not. I beleive that some men have higher testerone levels they can make a great living in the army. The british army has hundreds of years of history that has trained them and we are known and respected for our skills. You could make a great life for yourself if you choose that. Good luck with whatever descision you make.

The Army will not only train you, it will teach you how to responsible and self reliant. Plus you get to travel. My brother joined the service for computers, he's under 30 and is a senior administrator at a web hosting company.
