Could we ban gus-guzzlers? (Rednecks will go ballistic for sure) Should we build more nuclear power plants? Is alternative energy research severely underfuned in the US?

First let everyone own a gas guzzler, because if you need one once a week you are forced to buy one. If you buy one a lot of people are forced to use it if they need to or not.
Second, if you buy your next car and it gets over 40 mpg your insurance should be free (attached to your 1st car) and all taxes, reg fees should be set to $1 per year.
The simple truth is a lot of people that have to make a choice when buying a car will op for the larger one just because they have to use it 10 percent of the time and don't think they can afford to pay all the extra fees of a 2nd enviro-friendly car that they could end up driving more often.

I tried to keep my 50 mpg Geo for as long as I could and drove it 90 percent of the time, but even the savings at the pump didn't make up for all the extra costs of keeping it.

The eviro wacko's are pushing the issue the wrong way and are not helping the real issue.

I got to add to Bikers point:

I have a friend put on a water pack on my geo once and drove it almost a year. took my mpg to 70 and tons of power, the timing had to be changed on it so it wouldn't pass the smog even thou the inspector couldn't find nothing but clean air coming out of the tailpipe. He even had to check to make sure the car was running, it was funnier than all get out until I found out it was going to cost me $400 to restore the little thing back to it's normal pollution levels.

Use their oil first. Save ours, so we won't be dependent on them.
When the oil gets scarce the price wiil go up to a reasonable ammt. Then alternate sources of energy will be competitive.
Before we found cheap oil, there were small hydro plants all over the east and midwest. They still have windmills in the midwest that were installed in 1900. There is a lot of coal, and we have technology to clean it up, but oil and natural gas are too cheap.
Cars could get better mileage, but your government requires they have all that armor on them to protect bad drivers..

Alternative energy is the way to go. And yes, alternative energy is severely underfuned in the US and the world in the whole. But I hope it will change.

Actually you would have to destroy the big oil peoples power here in this country.
There is technology that has been around from the 60s for a carb that can give 100 miles to the gallon.
it was killed by the government by big oil money.

Well, there's more oil in places like Alaska and even Colorado. But the govt doesn't want to drill there.
