Halloween is a holiday based upon the traditional Pagan Holiday know as Samhain, prounouced sow wen. Later in order to bring the pagans into the christain Faith, Catholism adopted the day after as all saints day thus making Samhain become All Saints Eve or Halloween.

The traditions of dressing up and going door to door for treats is based upon pagan traditions of dressing up and going door to door to collect offerings for the souls of all of those in the village that had passed on in the last year.

Many People today still celebrate Samhain in the old traditions. My family goes to boo at the zoo a few days before Samhain in order to celebrate halloween then on Samhain we build a bonfire, tell ghost stories, set up a harvest feast, in which we set a place for any souls who wish to join us in the celebration of life and death.

Samhain is also the last of the harvest holidays in Celtic Pagan Tradition. It is concidered to be the Pagan New Year where the veil between worlds is at its thinnist and those who have passed on can come for a visit.

Halloween is literally 'The Eve of All Hallows' - the day before 'All Saints Day', a Holy Day in the Catholic Church and is itself the Holy Day of All Souls, . Traditionally it was probably a Pagan Feast which is not uncommon in the Catholic Church (I am a Catholic). In Ireland, as children we used to dress up in (the boys) in old womens clothing, blacken our faces with burnt cork and go from door to door chanting 'Any Apples or nuts'. It was a wonderful happy time (50 years ago) and probably still is - I have lived in London for 40 years. Another tradition was the Barmbrack. This was a fruit cake with certain things cooked inside it - (a poem on this to follow). After the door to door calling, we would return home and play Halloween games. Floating apples in a basin of water where you had to bite into the apple and remove it from the basin without using your hands. (I think this was devised to help get rid of the burn cork from our faces). There were many such games, usually using fruit which was and is plentiful at this time of year. A great time for the children: read on:

Halloween Barmbrack.

At Halloween we had Barmbrack,
The memory, it takes me back,
To happy days of innocence,
When a bag of sweets cost just two pence.

The dressing up, from door to door,
‘Apples or nuts’ the children implore,
With faces black from cold burnt ash,
Still there next day, after a wash.

The Barmbrack was a special treat,
It looked too good to dare to eat,
The prizes cooked deep within,
The thought it made my young head spin.

A small brass ring that shone like gold,
The secret that its finding told,
That you would be the first to wed,
If you clung to it all night in bed.

A matchstick meant you would see the light,
That you would know wrong from right,
But best was last, a thruppenny bit,
That you’d be rich, if you found it.

Such silly things, to a small boy,
Used to bring unending joy,
Now all that’s left is the memory,
Of the beautiful times that used to be.
