I know this might sound a little fruity but its an expression of feelings that can't be summed up in just one word. It's like a poem but you have to make it more appealing than that. Im not a big fan of poetry although I like rock and metal. Ironically music is a form of poetry. Im sorry you had to listen to me say that.

Music can be used in a variety of ways. For example, in films, music is used to evoke sadness, happiness, fright etc. Without music, many films would be quite bland, life would also be quite bland without music. It could be argued that, like art, music can be anything and therefore a recording of a busy New York or London street could be music. If someone did produce this (maybe they already have) they would probably say that their reasons were to represent the City as it really is, to almost reveal the emotions of the city through the sounds it creates. So, in conclusion, music makes life real. Without music, without sound, there would be an emptiness in the world.
This is really a bit random, but hopefully some of it made a bit of sense!

To celebrate greatness and joy , in the past most of the music was to express joy at winning a battle for example or at the birth of a child or wedding etc also in times off grief for example when somebody dies , it's only quite recently that music has become the commercial machine it is today .

To stop people like me from going insane.
Actually music for aesthetic purposes (ie: just for the sound of it) is a relatively new idea. It came about in European culture about 700 years ago. Before that, and in most other cultures, music has a purpose specifically tied to the occasion. Like war. Or marriage. Or rites of passage.

it relaxes people, yes some music does relax a person.
it is a way of people expressing their feeling they other wise are afraid to present.
it is an excape, if you don't want to be bothered by someone, you put your headset on and listen to the music and you are now in your own world.
when i travel on the bus, i use my music to pass time while i am in the bus, the trip does not seem as long.
i am sure there a lot of other reasons, but these are mine.

No reason in general .We buy it because we like it and get satisfaction from litsening to it. It brings back happy memories or reflects a certain mood we feel when playing a certain type of song.
