This churning noise is from your hard disk. It happened during the read/write operations. More noise in older hard disks. Probably some bad sectors in it and the hdd head is stuck in those bad sector Zones generating more noise. Regarding the sleep mode It is your configuration of the power scheme. You can chage the sleep mode activity interval in the power option settings. But it is good for the system, the monitor goes into blank in order to increase the monitor lifespan. My advise is when you dont want to use the pc for long interval (like durning sleep) shut down the pc to increase the life of the computer components and also you save the power for our country.

The Churning noise might me either your hard drive or the fan but in any case there is nothing to worry about. A good thing to do might be putting it on Hibernation.

Your hard drive has very small fast moving parts. Cooling it down and heating it constantly causes a lot of wear and tear. Keep it always on. Also, this will save you money in the future from not having to buy a new hard drive too soon. The hard drive will go bad its just a matter of when.

Your pc followers are meant to run consistently. Any malfunctioning may lead directly to break on your hardware components. despite if that's loud, or you in easy terms are conscious of it working each and every of the time, that sounds universal. inspite of the incontrovertible fact that, if there is a few extraordinary noise or any burning scent popping out from you workstation, you could desire to could desire to have it checked. Cheers, Arash

Just because it's sleeping, doesn't mean nothing is happening. Your hard drive must be doing something in the background. I can't put mine to sleep anymore because some driver is constantly running and it causes conflict.

Mine was doing that too and I took the part off the pc and cleaned out the inside fan...very carefully, and I mean dirt went everywhere! I think it was probably overheating and the inside fan would try to cool it off and it couldn't turn properly because of all the dirt. I know, it's gross...but live and learn. Good luck.
