,,Because of in the placings of the other elements in the perdiodic table, if I were attempt to work them out for myself, how would I do so? How does the positioning of the elements in the periodic table assist me?

No, an oxygen negative ion is O2- (this should be written with 2- small above right like in squared). This means there is a double negative charge on the oxygen ion corresponding to two extra electrons. This could come from two single potassium atoms becoming positive ions.

You need to read about valency and electron shells to understand this and link it to the periodic table.

oxygen is O -2.

If you know that Hydrogen is +1, and that water H2O is stable, then each oxygen must be O -2.

Look at the Roman Numerals on top of the Periodic chart.

potassium is in group 1 so its ion is 1+ going across the periodic table ignoring the transition metals, the charges go as follows 1,2,3,4,3,2,1,0 where 0 is the noble gases
