you do not get the coffee... you might however get the stories about balloon launches... fund raiser kickoffs.. small township or county meetings. while the top reporters cover the the headiners.. the mass murders.. major economic issues... president comes to town. however when i was a reported by news director always said ..there are no lousy stories..just lousy reporters. the story is what you make it/

This brings back memories (I'm a former reporter)
At many small papers, you start out doing general assignment reporting - covering everything from city council meetings to fairs. Then, your bosses will assign you a specific beat, whether it is a certain area such as crime, features or government, or you may be given an area to cover, such as a town or county and report on everything that happens there.
If you start a larger paper, you likely will start out the same way, unless you answered and ad for an opening covering a beat, in which you already have a given topic/area to cover.
At many smaller papers, not only are you the reporter, but you also get to take your own pictures to go with the story and get to write the captions for them.

More than likely they will give you the gov. beat. You will be covering supervisor meetings, city council meetings, court cases. It's not rocket science, in the least, so don't be to proud of yourself for having chosen this carrier. The pay is lousy, and the amount of intellect that you will have a desire to reflect, will be much greater than the amount that you have available.
Sorry ex. is reporter.

They have you cover the little stuff like school plays , human interest stories.
My cousin worked for a daily that had about 25,000 readers it took him 61/2years to finally do some hard hitting reporting that was a triple murder trial that lasted 7 months.

In my first newspaper job I rewrote obituaries, wrote photo captions, wrote the weather blurb and rewrote press releases. That was all before I ever got to go out and cover a story.
The editors need to make sure you have the basics of writing down before they have you write news.
