Pick certain features that you will compare in both, such as: use of concrete support & examples; vocabulary & word choice; organization (pattern of organization used, transitions, etc.) the content (the ideas), etc., etc. Once you've chosen what features you will compare, you need to be prepared to discuss those features in relation to both pieces of writing. For instance, you should not discuss organization in one article and not the other. Now, decide whether you want to format your paper subject-by-subject or feature-by-feature. Let's call them Article A and Article B. Look below:

Subject by Subject:
Article A
--content
--organization
--use of concrete support
Article B
--content
--organization
--use of concrete support

Feature by feature:
Content
--Article A
--Article B

--Article B
Use of concrete support

--Article B

Good luck!

The most common problem with compare/contrast essays is what one textbook (Wyrick's) calls the "so-what" factor -- the reader gets to read about the differences and similarities of two things, but is never told why they are being compared or why such a comparison is useful.

For this reason, the very first thing you need to do is to come up with a thesis statement, just like you would with any other essay. And the thesis statement needs to say something real -- NOT "Author X and Author Y have a lot of similarities and differences."

Perhaps the best way to do this is to see how their arguments differ (do they disagree?) and to then try to come to your own conclusion. (Or, if they don't disagree, but they make different points, your thesis might try to synthesize the two points of view, coming up with one single, coherent thought.)

Once you have your thesis -- your position -- you'll want to defend it by showing how you sorted out, combined, or resolved the two authors' arguments, and that step will pretty much require you to compare what they said (and note differences) in a perfectly natural way.

An essay is a short work of writing that treats a topic from an author's personal point of view. Essays are non-fictional but often subjective; while expository, they can also include narrative. Essays can be learned arguments, literary criticism, political manifestos, observations of daily life, recollections and reflections of the author.
The definition of an essay is vague, overlapping with those of an article and a short story. Almost all modern essays are written in prose, but works in verse have been dubbed essays (Alexander Pope's An Essay on Criticism and An Essay on Man). While today an essay is partly defined by its brevity, voluminous works like John Locke's An Essay Concerning Human Understanding and Thomas Malthus's An Essay on the Principle of Population refer to themselves using the term.
