Personally I don't think it's the school's place, I believe it's the parents place, but I'd curious about what you all think about this.

You have asked a question that really has, as part of its answer, the problem with America today, and why this Nation has come to be in the ever growing sad state of affairs it is today from a moral and ethical point of view.

The public school system does not now, nor has it ever had , nor will it ever have the responsibility to teach children about sex. Schools are meant to teach our children to read, write, and arithmetic. Having said that, I will now say the following: The responsibility of teaching children about sex has been given to the school system due to the lack of responsible parenting. Condoms are handed out freely in some public schools, because parents have failed to not only teach their children how babies are made, but have also failed to educate children on their moral and ethical responsibilities to a child, should they get pregnant (for girls) or get a girl pregnant (for boys).

The problem with allowing the school system teach sex education, is that the school system's collective hands are tied by case law and in some cases legislative law from really giving a moral foundation to sex education.

I don't care what anyone says, or tries to argue about this. Ever since SCOTUS disallowed the reading and teaching of the Bible, and prayer in our public school systems, our Nation has steadily declined. Our educational system is one of the worst in the world. Crime in schools and in civilian life has shot out of sight. In the 1950s, teachers said talking and chewing gum in class were their number one problems.

Fast forward to the 21st century, 122,000 students admitted in a recent survey they carry firearms to these war zones we call public schools out of fear for their lives (only God knows how many carry firearms to school for any reason at all, and just didn't admit it). Today the biggest problems with students, is rape, murder, felonious assaults and robbery. The ethical and moral fiber of this Nation has so weakened, that major universities, law enforcement agencies, the militatry and even industry has been forced to add a block of training in ethical and moral behaviors and what is acceptable and not acceptable to their training programs because the average American coming out of high school just simply has no idea or does not care what is right and wrong.

What we as a Nation should be asking is this: what has happened to us?

It should be a balance. The schools I think are better able to tackle the biological science part of it. But i think the logic, relationship, and emotional parts the parents have a better chance of tackling. But as one poster said. May parents do not take the opportunity to sit down with their kids after seeing two TV chatters fornicating on TV to school them on relationships. I think many parent do not know themselves are believe it is best to "experiment" to see what is the best fit. If you have a carpenter that believe that measuring by eye is better than the stuffy old way of using a square and ruler, they would never be able to teach anyone how to do it with a square and ruler. I think many parents have resigned that kids are going to do it(and with sex being used to sell everything and used define how well a relationship is)they might as well just hand out the condoms and hope for the best.

In a perfect world, it would be the parent's place and the parents would actually do the job. In reality though, many parents either can not or will not take the responsibility. In this environment, the schools really should fill the void. There are too many dangers out there (HIV, STD's, unwanted pregnancies) to let our children remain ignorant and learn from TV, movies and experimentation.

Parents should be the main teachers of their children's sex education.

However, I see nothing wrong with schools giving basic anatomical and hygiene information regarding reproduction as long as they don't push a political agenda on children as the California schools have been trying recently.

Yeah Governor Schwarzeneggar! You made the right decision!

I know it's the parent's job to teach their child about sex. Most parents are embarassed about it so they are more than happy to leave it up to schools to teach them about it. Because they can't get over themselves and the fact that they "have"to talk to their kid and sex. To me, people act like talking to their 10-12 year old about sex is "dirty" and "not right". In my opinion, they need to Be the parent, Be mature, and Find the time to talk to their kids about sex.

God Bless!!
