Prepaid cell phones are great if you have bad credit. Its expensive to get a regular contract with bad or no credit. But if you are one of the very few people out there with good credit, a contract is the best way to go. That way you can get whatever minutes you really need, nights and weekends are free, stuff like that.

From experience I can say, I think they are fine. The thing you have to take into concideration first is usage. If your going to be one of those "phone attatched to your ear" types, than prepaid is going to be more expensive. But if you just want a phone for emergencies, short calls, and the like, then pre-pay is the way to go. I used Virgin Mobile for 2 years before getting a contracted phone. They worked great for me.

They have a lock on the contract thing. You have to get a contract in this country if you want a cell phone.

I tried using tracfone, but it sucks because you have to type in all these stupid codes every month to activate the phone and you lose your minutes every month if you don't use them. a 100 min card= $40 no rollover good for a month. vs
a contract $39.95 = 3000 min with rollover if using cingular and the other big 5 cell phone companies.

you got to pick which one works for you, but you only have a couple of options. Like everything else in this country, oligopolies have you by the shorthairs.

prepaid cell phones are good if your not using the phone a whole lot. If you plan on being on it alot then it would not pay.

Prepaid phones can do everything another phone will do, it is more expensive if you call a lot.

I truly ought to disagree with Princess. I truly have a Tracphone and it truly works large for my applications. I not often use my telephone and frequently I not in any respect bypass over the minutes on their $20 playing cards with an hour of airtime and three months of provider. this skill I wind up paying about $8 in preserving with month for my cellular telephone! As for your uncle, if it says it comes with $40 of free airtime then that's what he receives. even as he makes use of up the airtime he will favor to purchase extra.

They have their pros and cons.
Pro -
pay only for what you use
con -
They are not the best deal unless you buy lots of minutes at a time
