i think its a bit like fibreglass or GRP where the carbon fibres are mixed with a resin and catalyst which makes it hard and stronger than steel but a lot lighter

Same priciple as fiberglass, woven fabric and resin. It is much stronger than fiberglass, but it isn't stronger than titanium.
