They could had no more stopped Hitler than we can stop Bush. Once a government get an idea to do something, they can be so fay into the project befroe anyone even knows that its going on that by the time the general populace realizas that somehtin needs to be done, it is too late to do anything. That's one ofthe main reason that governments keep their activities so secret, so they can get things done without interferance when those things shouldn't be done in the first place.

The German people believed in Hitler in the beginning. They were finally getting work and were no longer starving. They thought the government was deporting Jews, they had no idea what the Jews final destination was. By the time they realized it, Hitler had too much power and too much damage had been done. He controlled the military and had his SS troops. Nobody was going to question or argue with him and live through it.

You might want to read up on your history. They didn't stop Hitler because Hitler did a lot of good for them in the beginning as far as helping them to recover from the worldwide depression caused by the harsh terms of the Treaty of Versailles the ended WWI . By the time Hitler started doing alot of the bad things he's remembered for, he was practically a god in the eyes of the German people.

hitler came along when the country was in disarray after wwI and the people were looking for a leader. hitler siezed the moment and caught the german people off guard. he was a charismatic leader and they were decieved by his propaganda and promises of a better germany. they followed blindly before realizing what a mess they were in. that should be a lesson for the rest of the world in these latter days. sorry if my explanation seems a little religious. thanks for the question. that should make people think before making important decisions. good luck to you.

The people of Germany were fooled into allowing the Nazis to rise to power because their promise was that they would rid Germany of the Communists. Once the Nazis had their strangle hold on the country they outlawed the owning of weopons, so after the Germans gave up their weopons, it was impossible for the Germans to get rid of the Nazis on their own.

Unfortunately he created a climate of fear. He brainwashed the people into seeing enemies in any social group that wasn't Aryan. By the time the war started in 1939 there was no one that would dare dissent.

A lot were just afraid of dying, he held a pretty tight sense of fear. The other portion of his populace were brainwashed or even believed some of the things he said.
As far as what did they do? Some worked with "The Underground" and "The Resistance".

Got me. I never understood that either. In addition to all the atrocities that they committed, they were not even nice to the German people in general. You would have thought that might have done something.

Hitler was a very powerful orator...he had charisma and he was charming, some were easy swayed by this, some saw through it and were frightened and in hindsight asked themselves the same question. Perhaps they should not have voted for him.....
