Because the hands then frame the makers name and draw the person looking at the adverts eyes to it.

IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SMILEY FACES AT ALL.

It's purely an advertising ploy

If the hands are at 11 12 or 1 they may cover branding marks or logos.

If the hands are at 3 then it may cover the date and day

if the hands are at 5, 6 or 7 they may cover other branding icons or product specification of the watch.

Symettry always looks more appeling than non symetry thus this only leaves 10.10 or 8.20 and pointing upwards is positive

Thus 10.10 is favoured by elimination as the only symetrical position that ensures all the features and branding of the watch are displayed with a positive "feel"

............then again this could all be complete boll**ks

cos the make or name of the watch is usually under the 12 and the hands this way puts the name in the middle for you to see clearly.xx

Because typically, manufacturers place their name above the pivot point of the hands, and when they're placed in this configuration, the hands draw attention to and nicely frame the manufacturer's name.

I also heard that it was because it reminded people (without them realising) of a smile on a face and so it makes the watch more appealing than a sad one :)
