a few days ago my sister had a baby and called her Trisha, well, my husband who is 49 years old (and I am 40) has a hard time remembering names, so he tried to associate the baby's name with something that will help him remember it.

The best he came up was the "trash", he told me so and I got hurt but decided not to make a big deal, so I didn't say anything. A few days later while shopping at Costco, I asked him to pick up a gift basket because we will be going to visit my sister on Sunday.

Well, my husband said that he bought a new trash basket.

I don't understand if he is doing it on purpose or it is just a coincidence, it feels like he is, but then why would he want to hurt me? What do you think? And if he is doing it on purpose why?

A lot of people have a hard time remembering names and use word association to help them along.

If the baby was just a few days old, he has not had time to use this association in order to remember her name. He probably commited to memory the word "trash" to remind him of Trisha's gift basket. But with shopping and other errands, just the word "Trash" basket came to mind, so he got a trash basket.

Give him a break because you will be laughing about this later. Talk about the baby a lot using her name so it will be commonplace in his vocabulary. If that's the worse thing he ever does, you are so lucky.

He picked out a trash basket for a baby gift and you aren't sure if he is doing it on purpose?

Your husband has some unresolved issues concerning your sister, or perhaps children in general. Leave him at home, and demand he get a check up from his doctor if this behavior is unusual and out of the blue.

We as men are insensitive by a woman's standard.

If he really wished he could remember her name as I doubt he has ever forgotten a previous girlfriends name. We however prioritize everything so remembering her name may not be all that important to him. If you press him to remember it he may very well have to swap memory priority spots with something you value more in order to do so.

Let it slide for now and give him a year or two to learn it.

That seems kind of like he is being a jerk. It's not that hard to remember a babies name and saying "trash" is just mean. It sounds like he might either be mad at you or your sister. The best thing to do would be to talk to him about it if it hurts you or bothers you.

He calls himself joking with you, He is just trying to be funny and your being to serious. You know he isn't going to buy trash basket and take to your sister for her baby.

I think he might have something against your sister. While he may be intentionally trying to emotionally harm her, he may not know he's hurting you too. However, I wouldn't stick around with a guy like that; i'd get out of there asap!

This is ridiculous. You don't need a "hint word" to remember your niece's name. I would tell him that this is unacceptable and theat he should realize that this is his niece as well. If he can't accept that then you have some very serious problems with this jerk.

I THINK HE'S GOT SOMETHING AGAINST HER. MAYBE NOT BUT FROM WHAT YOU SAY I THINK HE IS DOING IT ON PURPOSE, BUT I WOULD TALK TO HIM AND TELL HIM THAT HE'S HURTING YOU. BECAUSE AT SOME POINT HE COULD HURT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN YOU AND FAMILY..

He's just being a stupid man. I'd be pissed at him too. Is he such an idiot that he can't remember a baby's name?
