NEVER GO TO FISHERMAN'S WHARF!!! Whoever said that doesn't know the city cause if they did they'd tell you that it's an overpriced tourist trap. If you want to meet cool people in a relaxed atmosphere, go to any bar or restaurant in the North Beach area (get started around Columbus and Broadway), if you can't find something fun to do around there you're blind. Also, the mission district has some cool bars and under the radar restaurants that are better than a lot of stuff you'll find downtown. Foreign Cinema on Mission St. comes to mind.
Another good area is divisadero/castro street. Unless you're scared of gay people you'll find tons of cool folks straight and gay along this stretch of SF. Try the Fly bar on Divisadero St.
Cesar for tapas on haight is cool also.
Best BBQ place in the city Memphis Minnies on Haight at steiner
In summary, avoid the most touristy areas, as there are plenty of places to meet people without buying 10 dollar drinks!

You could just wing it. You never know where you might meet someone. Or try Table for Six.com. You meet people over dinner. Craigslist got me some real creeps, but I lucked out by finding my husband.

The nearest Baptist Church on potluck night? Other places, I might say Methodist, but in San Francisco, you never know.
