1) As individuals, they probably couldn't care less, but it is part of their job to keep the customers off the equipment.
2) Heavy person sees light person sitting on the machine and says, "if she's doing it so will i". Fat person then dents the machine with his @ss.
3) If there are no chairs or benches to actually sit on, you can try arguing that point..

Because it's not your personal property and you don't have the right to "trespass" on the laudromat's property. Also, the attendant may feel that you are doing some damage to the machine by affecting the calibration of the washing machine or by leaving nicks in it. It's the same principle as going to someone's house and putting your feet on their furniture. It's also about having good manners and respect while in a public setting.

I think it's because they don't want children sitting on the machines and when they see adults doing it, they do it. Then they fall and sue the owner of the laundromat.

You should tell them to free their mind, because their a-r-s-e will surely follow.
Took my pants off in a Laundrette before, but I wasn't doing my washing etc so they kicked me out *ossers!
You can't exactly sit in the laundrette with a vibrator can you? LOL
