Watch a video of a 4 stroke engine in motion (down at the bottom of the page). The 3rd stroke is the power stroke. The video says combustion. That stroke of the engine creates the power, that the engine puts out.

my boyfriend taught me to remember it as SUCK,SQUEEZE,BANG AND BLOW
so 3rd cycle- bang, is ignition,spark plug igniting the fuel to cause a bang to force the piston back,to enable the unburnt fuel to be exhausted!

2) up, compress mic, ignite at the top of the upstroke
3) down, as air + petrol vapour explodes
