I know that many people I know who happen to decorate early for Christmas do so because they don't want to have to decorate in the cold during December. If you decorate either early November or even a little later, then you don't have to deal with the cold wind and cold temperatures as well as the snow that causes one to fall so easily off the roof of one's house.... OUCH! HOWEVER, I think that the inside of the house and most of the outside should reflect the closest holiday, and that the lights that you have hung outside should remain unlit until the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

I will decorate my place for Halloween. But not for Thanksgiving. The Friday after Thanksgiving I will pull out all my Chritmas decorations and decorate!
As for why they are selling Halloween and Chrismas items at the same time, the economy must be suffering...that is always a BAD sign! I have been in retail for 11 years.

Because the commercial, secular Christmas is a societal illness, and it's progressing.

It used to be that nobody discussed Christmas shopping and decorating much before Thanksgiving. I am actually old enough to remember that. Now, the day after Hallowe'en, if not before, out comes the Christmas kitsch.

It's discouraging, especially to those of us who don't enjoy the commercial celebration of the holiday and who like to savor each day of the year for its own flavor.

And in my opinion, it contributes to post-holiday "letdown" and depression. You build up, race around and work like mad for three months, against a constant backdrop of red and green, and a soundtrack of carols, carols, carols, and on December 26th, what happens?

All you hear on the radio is top 40, the stores are displaying Valentine cards, and acting as if Christmas is something embarrassing they'd rather just forget. You get odd looks for saying "Merry Christmas" and dirty looks for delivering anything "late".

Unplug the Christmas machine and refuse to participate. It's the only way to avoid the self-induced cultural insanity.

I know that some people decorate in October for Christmas because they don't want to be hanging lights in December and frigid cold. But I know what you mean. I am just now putting out some fall decorations (and a scarecrow or two for Halloween -because the girls are getting excited).

Ease up. If other people want to decorate early that is their choice. I agree with you though. I like my holidays in order of dates.. LOL. Am getting ready for Halloween now. But I think you must be referring to the stores stocking the shelves. I hate that too. Walmart stinks.

To make people panic and start spending money!! I hate it! It ruins the holidays. By the time Christmas gets here I'm so sick of seeing Christmas trees and lights that I could scream!

Retailers get their trucks of holiday merchandise three months before the actual holiday. They need to put it out in stores since there's no room in the warehouse to store it.

Besides, just seeing some of the stuff in the stores now makes me all tingly and makes me want to get into the Christmas spirit!

Because the Christmas season is so short and all the goodwill and peace stuff doesn't last.
I saw Christmas stuff in August.

It's because the stores know they can make MONEY... so the people in the stores rush around to buy stuff so it doesn't miraculously disappear next week, and they don't want it just sitting around so they put it up in the middle of September... and then they don't take it down until March. Lazy people.
