Hallmark commercials do it effectively. Even some credit card companies manage to pull it off. What is “it?” “It” is a tearjerker. Filmmakers have a tough task when they attempt to create a touching, sensitive film. Tearjerkers need a delicately balanced emotional storyline so as not to come off nauseatingly sweet or maudlin. These films did it so effectively they left a lasting impression on their audiences.

1) "Titanic"
Despite "Titanic's" predictable ending, James Cameron's sweeping romantic epic managed to captivate moviegoers with its beautiful tale of love and loss. The tragic and compelling love story provides a human element to Cameron's historically accurate version of the sinking of the unsinkable luxury liner.

2) "An Affair to Remember"
Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr star in this timeless romantic classic. Playboy Nicky Ferrante meets night club singer Terry McKay aboard a ship bound for New York. They're both engaged to others, but vow to meet again in six months at the top of the Empire State Building.

3) "Beaches"
If you didn't cry at "Beaches," then you must be one of those rare people who never cry at movies. Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey portray a pair of best friends who grow up, grow apart, and reunite for the sake of their friendship and Hershey's daughter.

4) "Steel Magnolias"
"Steel Magnolias" features a fine ensemble cast, intelligent writing, and an entertaining, though highly emotional, storyline. Shirley MacLaine, Dolly Parton, Julia Roberts and Sally Field headline the talented cast in this female "buddy" movie with a heart.

5) "One True Thing"
Renee Zellweger, William Hurt, and Meryl Streep make up the dysfunctional family in this rivating drama. Streep plays a mother dying from cancer who turns to her career-minded daughter to help out during her last few months.

6) "Philadelphia"
Tom Hanks won his second Academy Award portraying AIDS victim, and attorney, Andrew Beckett. Antonio Banderas is perfect as Hanks' lover, and Denzel Washington is incredible as the attorney's attorney.

7) "Dying Young"
Julia Roberts, Campbell Scott and Vincent D'Onofrio give compelling performances in this 1991 Joel Schumacher film. Julia stars as a companion/nurse to Campbell Scott, who's dying from blood cancer. You just know this isn't going to have a "happily ever after" ending.

8) "The Story of Us"
Bruce Willis (not your typical romantic leading man) and Michelle Pfeiffer star as a married couple who separate, and can't figure out what exactly went wrong with their relationship.

9) "Untamed Heart"
This strange, sad romantic tale stars Christian Slater and Marisa Tomei as co-workers who fall in love only to be separated as soon as the relationship starts to blossom. "Untamed Heart's" bizarrre storyline makes it one of those films you don't want to like, but can't resist.

Schindlers List. The saddest most brilliant and epic movie of our time. OR Sophie's Choice (a mother has to choose which of her children can live when she is taken to a concentration camp.)

I would have to say that Old Yeller is the saddest movie I've ever seen. It was pretty hard core when I was only 6 years old the first time I seen it, it sticks with me.
