I am about to install a new fence, now we are in doubt which side goes in and which out, does the pretty flat side goes toward my side of the yard or toward the neighbor!?

there is no "law" to say which way a fence goes up.it is totally your choice.usually the finished side will face out towards your nieghbors, but that is just to be nice.just make sure that when putting up your fence you dont rob yourself of any property.for example,in many states if you put up a fence and its say3ft from your property line after a certain amount of time it become your nieghbors.this is something that happened to my grandma and she lost almost a half acre of property in total.be a nice person and put the good side out.

Call City Hall or a local fence company, they'll be able to tell you what code is for your area. We had the pretty side facing our home. Talk to your neighbors, ours went in half with us since they where planning to install a fence too!. Worked out great for all.

The pretty side goes in... BUT.... BUT.. a lot depends on the laws in YOUR particular state.. In Texas, I know..the left side of the fence as you face it is YOUR responsibility and the other half is the neighbor's.. in Arizona, it is not.. it (the fence) belongs to both

Fences are like clothes. The pretty side goes out.

Rule of thumb, the "pretty flat side" goes to the neighbours, which I think that the side with the beams looks better anyway. Some reason it makes the yard look bigger then the flat side.
At least that is the rule of thumb in Ontario

That depends on you. If you want to see the "nice" finished side, put the boards on the inside. If you want to look at the poles and the neighbors see the pretty side, put the poles inside. I like looking at the "nice" side, so my boards are on the inside. I don't really care what the neighbors see. Works for me!!! All those people that told you that the boards go on the outside are your neighbors, they want to see the "nice" side. Don't be fooled. You look at the "nice " side. You are paying for it!!! Not them!!!!!

The planks go on the outside so you see the rails in your yard. Somehow my neighbors fence company did it backwards facing our house, and they had to put another set of planks on our side.

It's customary and sometimes code to have the good side face your neighbor.
