Why do ravel and unravel mean the same thing?

For the same reason that "fat chance" and "slim chance" mean the same thing.

Ravel means to wind something up (as with knitting wool) and unravel means to unwind it, English meanings change (as in gay) so don't ask me

They don't,, to ravel is to intertwine something, to unravel is to undo it.
