Hi,
Yes, it sounds just like thrush. I thought it before I even finished reading your question and seeing that the doctor thought it is thrush as well. This is because at 10 months there are usually no latch problems. Sudden, sharp, shooting pains in the breast are a telltale sign of thrush. I personally had the same problem and the baby did not have any signs of thrush in his mouth - no white patches or redness. I did have somewhat red nipples. Thankfully, this is easily treated - but both you and the baby need to be treated with prescription medication. If both aren't treated you will reinfect the baby or vice versa. Congratulations on nursing for 10 months so far. Here's to another 10 months of breastfeeding bliss!

It may be irritated from the hard sucking and/or biting your baby is doing. Make sure your baby is not becoming lazy and not latching on properly. This could cause rubbing of the nipple on the roof of your baby's mouth. If your baby prefers this side, he/she may be working it too much. Try offering the other side more. You may even want to express your milk manually on that side for awhile and see if the soreness goes away. In the meantime, put ice or cold compresses on it and maybe some cream to soothe it as well. You may also have a blocked duct, so you might try putting a hot compress on your breast while rubbing it. This will help break the blockage up. Watch for any unusal discharge, odor, or redness (streaks running from your nipple to your breast). If any of these occur, contact your doctor ASAP. Not sure what else to tell you. Sorry!

Could still be thrush, but maybe you have mastitis? Do you have a fever or anything? Either way, you might need an antibiotic for it. If it's not, it might just be a cracked nipple that got irritated. You can put some of that nipple cream on, and that should help.

Don't listen to half of the ignorant answers you've just received.
It has happend to my daughter and yes it was thrush. Did the doctor give you anything for it? If not you might want to see someone from laleche as suggested by steelypen.
Good Luck and don't worry but treat your nipple with a good cream.

i had thrush after my son was born and boy did it hurt. the problem is there can be differences in people and their babies. My son didn't have any white stuff either but my nipps were pink and sore. I thinki I got it b/c I was trying so hard to not leak so I had damp breast pads all the time. We both tookThe prescription meds for thrush and it cleared up in about 2 weeks. Good luck...it gets better!

After ten months that is a little weird....is it possible that there are just one or two teeth under the surface of the gum and without you realising at the time (it may be quite subtle) your baby is chewing slightly, and thats whats making it hurt? I recommend camilosan as a breast cream, just to begin with to see if it works, its quite reasonably priced, and works a treat!

This could be caused by many things....blocked duct, eased by massage, pumping, and warm compress.....baby getting teeth! this can cause discomfort to your breasts/nipples even before the teeth cut through the gum, for this I would suggest Palmers cocoa butter nipple cream! It works REALLY well and is totally safe dor baby.....or your milk could be drying up, for this try pumping....and last but not least...your doctor could be right, I would get a second oppinion.

It could be thrush, or it could be you're getting your period back soon. I always noticed changes in my body when my period resumed with my first (and fluxuations of milk supply too).

It could be that after 10 months your baby is getting lazy with his latch. Perhaps you need to make sure he's latching properly before you allow him to nurse?

It doesn't sound like thrush. Get a second opinion.
