My daughter has a multi-coloured belt and black pants from Hot Topic that her bf got her. They are nice. My daughter is obsessed with that store and desperately wants to go but it is about a 5 hour drive from here.
Stop describing stuff as being gothic...don't even mention the word. Since he is against that particular store why not check out used clothing stores. You can get some really cool stuff there. My teen daughter usually gets some really "interesting" stuff at second-hand places. Some I don't approve of but I don't downright forbid it. I just make suggestions on how certain things can be made to be less revealing and point out that she doesn't really want people staring at her cleavage all the time and that certain clothes will automatically draw a person's attention there. She listens (most of the time) and comes up with good ideas/compromises.

I LOVE Hot Topic!
Too bad I haven't been there... im stuck with giving my friends the money to buy me stuff when they go down.
(also, im the daughter of the answerer above me, "dellajoy")
And ya I think it's a good idea to change the word "gothic", maybe try using the word "punk", does your dad get mad at that? Anyway I don't totally label what the way I dress. But I would say it's more punkish. But I mainly just wear what I want. Some days it's sorta punk/preppy... which sometimes doesnt look that bad. (although im against prep clothes like America Eagle..*actually I loath AE*.
I can find some pretty great things at thrift stores. There most likely wont be any bondage or tripp pants but some interesting tops. (the one my mother is talking about above was black with weird arms... they were see through black cloth and flawled out, reminded me of wings lol. But the necking was sorta a V neck that went down too far, showing too much cleavage. So I put a red tank top under it. It made it look better.

Here's what you should do to really show your dad that you can do whatever you want : First and most important(!) get a job(not flipping burgers, that won't pay any bills, let alone buy the things you want) your job must pay enough to a.) rent yourself a home; b.) pay for electricity; c.) pay for a phone, if you plan to use the internet ; d.) buy a car to get TO work; e.) buy gas, insurance, etc. for your car; f.) buy food to eat ; and finally g.) buy your precious 'goth' clothing, then rent or buy a place to live, get a car, pay your own bills, buy your own food, and finish school at the same time that you are doing everything else, and your dad will see that you are mature enough to make your own decisions on what type of clothing you can buy! Of course, by the time you do all of those things, you will no longer be searching for an identity that you feel others like you CAN identify with, and you probably won't think that the 'goth' thing is so 'cool'. Until then, my best advice to you is to find a Holy Spirit filled church and experience how you can be loved and accepted for who you are, without buying a certain type of clothing, or anything else. Guess I'll stop now, since you quit reading a long time ago.

I have found that most people say they want to be gothic because they want to "be different and express their individuality". The only problem is being gothic DOESNT make you different. You can walk into any mall and see at least 50 kids with black hair, trip pants, and piercings everywhere. Create your OWN style. Im not saying that you cant appreciate trip pants or things like that, but don't catagorize yourself as "gothic". Just be you. It reminds me of the saying "you laugh cause i'm different, I laugh cause you're all the same".

*turn* gothic just sounds goofy. It's like saying you want to turn into a banana.
If you want to dress in a gothic style, great. If you want to listen to gothic music, great. If you want to decorate your room gothic, great. If you're living at home and your dad pays for everything you get, you're stuck with it...it's part of growing up. You *can* approach it a little more maturely by offering compromises. You can propose a deal...maybe for every A on your report card he could reward it by some funky clothes that you like. However, getting upset and wound up only reinforces his postition that you're not mature enough to choose for youself (not saying you are, just a 'for instance').
Believe it or not, there are plenty of people who gravitate to the gothic aesthetic who "grow up" and maintain that style. The beauty of that is that as time goes by and your income increases, you can start buying the really expensive stuff...yes, it does happen...all the time.
Been there...done that..still there after 30 years (but with a whole lot of tee shirts)

If you were my kid, I'd be ok with it. Tell him, "so what if it's stupid. Some day I'll grow out of it, but let me enjoy my age. These clothes aren't the worst things I could be wearing." There's going to be plenty of years ahead when you'll have to dress more maturely, but your dad shouldn't try robbing you of your young years and the cool goth stuff. It seems harmless. I'd say, "color your hair any color, wear black clothes with chains, get a piercing! Just make time for SCHOOL WORK and keep the grades good, stay away from trouble and the wrong crowd."
Years away from now, you'll say you wasted your money on this stuff, but this is still the only time you get to be a teenager. Don't get arrested or pregnant. Good luck to you!

Although it is your choice to "turn gothic" you don't have to call it that. I but from both Abercrombie and Hot Topic and am neither "preppy" nor "gothic" buy what you want and explain to him the pros and cons. Tell him it's what you are like, don't say "I'm turning gothic"

well do you really want to turn gothic? if you're not that sure, id listen to your dad because he's just looking out for you. but if you're really sure, try hanging around a lot of goths and see if you feel comfortable. and tell your dad that hot topic is not only gothic clothes

meet half ways. compromise. Address him in a respected manner and ask him Im __ age and I would like to buy these pants.etc. If he says no w/out a reason then he has a reason why he doesn't want you to & hes not willing to talk to you about it. If he tells you why then hes looking out for whats best for you.
I wanted to dye my hair when I was 12-13 ish & they wouldn't let me but I got over it.
