If your necklaces are silver, then vinegar will do the trick. It is quite a common problem, and makes the silver turn black too, which I personally like as it looks old and tarnished, but I have had jewellers practically rip my silver earrings and necklaces off me and clean them up all shiny ... never minding my black-marked skin! So dab some vinegar on cotton wool for your skin and put your necklaces in a bowl of it to soak for an hour or so.

Thornsey, silver (and occasionally gold) DO leave black marks! I love silver but cant wear it, my skin turns silver black and leaves marks on me too, facial wipes gets it off better than soap and water by the way. To the rest of the question.. your own personal chemical make-up and pH values will cause a reaction like any other chemical/metal reaction. Some people have a highly reactive skin to metals on their body. I can make bright sparkly gold look like antique gold in a few days, silver starts turning in a matter of hours.

If the facial wipes dont work then run a flannel under a hot tap, wring out then place on neck with bit of soap.

Do the baby oil thing with your neck and coat your necklace in clear nail polish to stop this happening again.

Is your necklace silver and is it tarnished? Get yourself some jewellery cleaner (from most supermarkets, in household section) and give it a wipe with a soft cloth. If it comes away black, there's your answer. Clean your necklace thoroughly and regularly.

Use a mild scotch-brite. The dollar stores sell packages of different grit scotch-brites, and they can be uses as an exfoliate. I use one to remove dead skin cells from my face, one for my body, and one for my hands.
