I have an older laptop. It is a Dell Inspiron 1150. For some reason I hear a strange yet somewhat faint high-pitched noise in the system. It gets really loud sometimes. Although, when ever I am scrolling the noise stops, and right when I stop scrolling it starts up again. It is driving me crazy, do you know if this is normal and what causes that noise?

i would say it isn't the fan. it must be something with the display (while scrolling, the display has to output all the changes, with other words - the display is busy. as soon as you stop scrolling, the image is stationary and the display becomes idle).

to locate the noise, take a screwdriver or any metal stick, put one end on the screen and the other end to your ear, so you can better hear where from the noise is coming. do the same on the keyboard and the palm rest.

if the noise is coming from the display, i would say it's no more worth to replace it. if the noise is coming from inside the laptop it could be the hard disk. a hard disk is easy to replace but has the drawback of installing all software again or you can maybe copy the entire content from the current disk to the new one.

I think the fan is going out. Better have it checked.
