Cheap food with lots of cheap filers.
Ground corn is a cheap filler and should not be in dog food.
If you feed dog chow you have to feed so much food and the dog poops huge piles.
I prefer to feed a very high quality dog food and have less dog waste and a better fed dog.

Our 3 year old Retriever/Lab has been eating nothing but Purina since she was weaned. She's never had any health problems or anything. She had Purina Puppy Chow as a puppy and then Purina Beneful now. Everyone is always commenting on how beautiful she is and numerous times people have asked if she was available for breeding (she's spayed, so, no).

My parent's dog has a sensitive stomach and there are very few foods or treats that don't make her sick. Beneful is one of the few that she can eat without getting sick. I'm not saying that other foods are terrible, but if it's one of the few things that she CAN eat, it's can't be all bad.

Our cat eats Purina Indoor and loves it. She has also never had any health problems.

I do like Iams foods, but I don't see why I should pay more for them when the Purina foods do just fine for our furbabies.

I feed both my dogs and my cats Purina Pro Plan. I started using Purina food when my oldest cat became diabetic. Purina had developed a prescription diet for diabetes in cats and dogs. When that cat died, I looked for a comparable food to continue feeding my cats. Pro Plan has a large amount of protein, which is important for cat food.

My dogs eat Pro Plan, and I have yet to see a problem. They are healthy, and have wonderful coats and are not overweight.
It seems to be good for my pets. I'm sure that there are others that would not agree, and that's ok. I'm not on here to sell food. I just find that the cat food has the most protein, and Purina was the first to develop a cat food that fit the most recent recommendations of the feline veterinarians that I know.

I have mixed emotions-when I was growing up I fed my dogs on whatever we could afford, and they lived long healthy lives. Of course now I have succombed to advertising and feed Inova or Solid gold-but I really think my animals are healthier looking.

If it's a cost issue, then Purina would probably be OK, supplemented with some boiled chicken, etc.

The premium foods actually require less food, so they may not really be more expensive in the long run, however I have never done an actual test to quantify this.

As for cat food, my male cats always seem to require a premium cat food to avoid the urinary track thing.

Its better than most foods but it does suck quite a bit. I feel purina is a big name corp. in for the money. Why else would they make a high quality food (purina one) that isnt even that great and then a bunch of low quality foods (kibbles and bits) that are just poor? Also they claim to make natural food which I have checked and it is very poor also. I love my dogs and spend the extra bucks on feeding them well. Some ppl say you dont have to buy the expensive foods for your dog unless theres a digestive problem or something. But its like having a kid. Would you feed them cheap food that they could eat but know its not good for them and feed it to them all the time?

My niece breeds, shows, raises and trains Shiba Inu dogs, she sells Eagle Pak dog food and she recommended Purina One puppy food for my 4 mo old German Shepherd puppy, he seems to love it and today he weighs 44 pounds. I trust her advice seeing she is very knowledgable about dog nutrition and I know Purina One is one of the best dog foods on the market today. My own dogs in the past have been raised on Iams, and Royal Canin, but she said Purina One for puppies has all the essential nutrients that alot of the other high priced food has as well.

I was just going to say, "I never tasted it", but then I saw your statement about animal use. My dog likes Dad's trail mix and nothing else. She wouldn't even try Purina. My cats eat anything I put in front of them, so I buy the Wal-Mart Special Kitty brand. It's a good bargain and very tastey (or so my cat's say).

We have always fed Purina to our dogs and cats. My dogs have always lived at least 12 years and my cats are 15 and 14 with no medical problems.

crappy food loaded with cheapo grains, especially corn; which dogs and cats cannot digest. THey add grain to cut the cost which is why it's so much cheaper than other foods. THey also add sugar and other stuff to make it tasty for the animals. They will survive on it, but it's kind of like feeding your kid sugar pops cereal every day.
