As much as I hate to admit it...cuz I really don't like the guy...
You gotta give it to "Big Frank."
Not only has he reserected his career, but he's almost single-handidly carried his team all season.
Gotta vote for the big guy.

If you forget the standings for a second (which nobody will), David Ortiz should be the hands-down MVP. His OPS is incredible, his Runs Created (a Bill James invention with a lengthy, but sensible formula) leads the league, and you can always make the case that he is a game-winning hit machine. He seems to rise to the occasion when his team needs him more frequently than anyone else. It isn't his fault the Red Sox can't pitch.
It will come down to Derek Jeter and Justin Morneau (and maybe Johan Santana, although I'm one of those people who thinks they created a SEPERATE pitching award for a reason). Frank Thomas is a wonderful story, but he "only" has 109 rbi, and doesn't have that magical .300 batting average that MVP's usually manage to have.
I'll make a conditional prediction. If the Twins can come all the way back and actually win the Central, Morneau will get the MVP. If not, Jeter will get it, although looking at his stats, I honestly don't see why he deserves it. Like Morneau, he just happens to be one of the only players among the league leaders in some of the popular statistical categories that is going to the playoffs. If you go only by the stats and forget about team record, Jeter is maybe the 10th best player in the league. The Indians, who were never in the playoff race, have 2 players (Hafner and Sizemore) who had a better year than Jeter, and Hafner will have missed the final month of the season.

I think is should go to Justin Morneau of the Twins. His
team has a shot at the division title, and he's clearly a
big reason for that. Derek Jeter is good, don't get me wrong,
but if he went down to injury, the Yankees are still loaded
enough to compensate for his loss. I don't think the MVP
should go to a guy whose team didn't even make the playoffs,
eliminating Mauer, Dye, Thome, and Ortiz from consideration.

Derek Jeter will get it.
Not because he has the best stats (he doesn't - Morneau definitely has better), but because no one had a truly dominating season, and Jeter will get it this year as a "Lifetime achievement award". He's been great for a while, and does so much more for his team than anyone else, stuff that doesn't show up in the statbook.
As far as Big Papi goes, he won't win on a team that ends up 10 games out of first. MVP of what? An average team? I don't think so.

Probably Jeter. As much as it pains me to say it.
I'd like to see Mauer win it. Heck, I'd like to see Ortiz win it, but I don't know that he's really had an MVP season.
