Sparks were using the kind of literary wit that would later surface in all the cases you mention, along with US outfits like They Might Be Giants, while many of the later generation were being born and growing up. They also spearheaded the simple front-man, background guy combo that has regularly been successful in later years.

The keyboard player was not the front man. His brother (the singer) was and still is. Sparks are a band, not a duo.
