It's one of the bi-products of anonymous posting. Kind of the same phenomena that occurs while driving and someone cuts you off. You know they can't hear you so you pull out every expletive in your vocabulary and slam them and the gene pool from which they oozed.

I agree that we would benefit more from a more temperate level of discourse, but the urge to inflame, attempt wit, soap-box, or otherwise expound and posit grossly uninformed opinion is too great a temptation to avoid.
Thus, we have this "democratic" forum within which to wallow.
Sometimes, I choose to swim in an ocean, rather than the kiddy pool, but, hope springing eternal, I keep thinking that the little ones have learned to potty-train their mouths.

I agree. I think one of the "faults" of Yahoo Answers is that kids or kid-like adults find a need to amass points, so they log on and give one word or glib phrase answers, simply to get their two points..

I wish Yahoo would create software that could disavow those answers that aren't answers.

For example, I once asked if anyone in the Carmel, California area would care to correspond, and I got the response of "Homo" in my email. Just that one word.. To me, if I was a teacher in school, and was given that answer on a test, I'd simply shrug and not take it seriously.. But on Yahoo Answers, I felt a sense of disappointment, that was disproportionate, as I had hopes for a genuine, kind response..

I love Southern sentiments. I know it's not popular to look at the good parts of the old South, but there was kindness, gentility and humor there, that Sam Clemens personified, but that is now, all but Gone with the Wind.

Hi, I know how you feel I read some of these responses and some of them are really cold blooded and not helping to the person that is answering the question. Me myself I try to be courteous and kind but there are times I get snappy answers and rude really rude ones so with them I just ignore them and keep going.

Don't stop asking question just because you have a lot of ignorant people around that is just what they want to do and that is get you off. Just keep your head up and keep asking you will in time get an answer that will help you in the right ways. :)

Somebody asks a question (ex. Why do Christian do such-and-such), and a bunch of people get offended by it. An online shouting match starts, and soon everyone is eating at each other.

No, your not out of touch, there are some people out there who are just ignorant and have nothing better to do with their time than to put people down, who think that they have to act so childish. I think it would serve them well to grow up and show some maturity.

I have seen some of the questions that people are asking on here and they genuinly would like people's opinions about stuff, that's legitimate, but there are some out there who have nothing better to do than make fun of them.

Hope that this helps...God Bless

I don't mind the snappy come-backs, or even the smart aleck questions. Humor is good for my soul.

I think the hostility comes from the anonymity of the format. There are no serious consequences for abusive answers, and people take advantage of their facelessness. it's too bad because it really inhibits communication.

Notice how most of the rude people aren't answering your question. Odd, isn't it?
Mostly, I just try to help as I can and be polite while doing it. Sometimes, when people ask rude questions, I answer rudely or just move on to the next question. Like in life, the internet is full of rude, ignorant people who live to insult others. *shrug* Sad, but true. Best if you just don't let them get to you.

Some people are ignorant there fore they don't know any-better, you have to learn to overlook the ignorance in some people and hope some day they will learn to do better. And some people are so mean spirited it makes them feel better about themselves to be vicious. Sad but true.
