I don't recommend it. A torsion spring is not a regular garage doors spring. They are with sectional garage doors and there can be one or two springs. They are located across the header.

They come in several wire sizes as well as lengths. They are the action that lifts the door. The also have a particular amount of turns on them to make this action. They must be turned exactly. Of the action of the door will be incorrect.

If you have the door on the automatic door opener it could cause your motor to burn out. Electric openers are only to be used on correctly balanced doors. Easy up and easy down without slamming.

There is also a special tool that is used to put the turns on the spring.

In many states you can't buy torsion springs unless you are a contractor.

Best of luck

All you have to do, is raise the garage door, an block it up with a couple of 2X4s, so that the door wont 'fall down' and take you off the ladder.

After you raised the door, then the tension is off the spring.

Now, get your new spring, and as you dissasemble the old spring, replace it with the new one exactly the same way. Its not a hard job, just that a lot of people are scared to do it for the fist time, after that, your a pro :)

I wish you well..

I'm going with crystal on this one, the guy who says it's easy has never changed a torsion spring, he's referring to the pulley type. A steel dowel a strong body, four hands, are definitely needed. The garage door needs to be Down. Call a pro. I doubt the spring is broke, it probably just needs to be adjusted. And they can very easily knock your teeth out. No kidding.
