Do you want to change because you want to stay home? My dad was a driver and he got work for one of the companies he transported for. Sounds like you'd make a good transport manager, organising other drivers and their loads! You don't even need to limit yourself to OTR. DHL and other companies would certainly benefit from your knowledge. There are limitless opportunities. One ex-driver friend of mine got work in the fashion industry, organising transportation of raw materials (cloth and leather) to fashion capitals, and the transportation of finished goods (designer fashions) back to the UK.
Good luck!

Sorry Chris,
Company's don't like to employ drivers, especially from the same firm and promote them to managers. The reason for this is that companies will always be worried that you'll take the driver's side rather than the company line.
I've never met a transport company yet that doesn't want it all their own way. For example a friend of mine who helps to run an area DC for Tescos was involved in an alleged closed meeting. The only subject on the agenda was number crunching. This involved comparing how much a British driver wanted to drive a Tesco's lorry, given that all British drivers are now fully aware of the chronic national shortage of staff in the game with a big ticket - against the amount of damage being done by the Eastern Bloc economic migrants who are quite willing to drive our trucks for as much as £2 or £3 an hour less than we are.
If you want a job as a transport manager you'll be far better off being vague about it and say you have SOME experience within the industry rather than saying you got 20+ years as driver, because the company will instantly mark you down as a Drivers man.

First of all you need to do up a resume for that job you want and give it to the office and see. Just because you drove a truck for that long doesnot mean you know the paper work. That kid may have just came from college where that kids knows more about the paper work then you do. So take some computer classes and ask around to see if they will think of you for that job.. good luck to you

Sorry to hear... unfortunately it looks like that this will always be so from now on. Young guys will be preferred to the veterans. I guess one reason is that the businesses change quicker and experience does not count as much anymore... which I think is wrong! Companies just need to learn to support their employees through the changes better and the economies of the developed countries should find a way to utilize the more experienced employees. Tough though...!!!

Don't despair as I work for a national waste refuse company and we have recently employed a 60 year old. Try putting to them that you have the experiance of a driver and you can communicate with the lads and girls. The new kids have no experiance of this and will ask them to do the impossible. Keep trying .

The youngsters are more decorative. With that many years in you may have enough year in so you can retire soon. Since you know your job well they would have do that rather than train you for an office job and then leave in a few years. If they post a job then the person with seniority usually gets that.

Interesting question. Could be several things coming into play here. Ever heard, "Do a good job and get your reward.......a screw job"? Could be they need your expertise in the job you are doing.
Many companies want "new blood" to train for the future.
Some companies want the "older employees" to move OUT so no retirement pay will be required.
And last.....perhaps the Newbee KNOWS someone in the company and thats how he/she got the job. Companies do things for a reason and that reason it to benefit the company...NOT the employees. Did you make your desires WELL known?????? Good Luck Pops

They do this because they want someone trained there way. If you've been there that long you might be considered to be more argumentative. A kid basically has a virgin mind for that job and will soak in what they tell him or her. So things will be done their way period. They think you'll have to many how come questions,And why don't we do it this way instead questions. They don't want to be bothered by someone who might think they can do the job in a better way.Since they only want it done their way!
