To take a single still image of you desktop just hit the Print Screen key on your keyboard(usually says "Prt Scr"). Then just paste it("Edit > Paste") into your favorite image editing program and save it. Many popular image editing programs usually have an option built in to capture the desktop image. In Paint Shop Pro it is often found under "File > Import > Screen Capture".

Hitting Print screen is one way, another is to download a free program that allows a lot more flexibility in how you capture, what you capture and whether you want to change the look of the capture. You might wish to check these links out, most are freeware, those not, I've indicated:
http://www.wisdom-soft.com/products/screenhunter_demo.htm Free
http://www.hyperionics.com/ Free trial
http://www.freewarefiles.com/cat_3_40_Screen-Capture.html A group of different screen capture links all in one place...free, try before buy etc.
Good luck...
