pre-decimalisation a penny was made up of four farthings, in the 1950s and early 1960s a farthing could be spent at the sweetshop to get a black-jack chew or similar sized sweet. Small cadbury chocolate bars cost 1 penny.

Ah, no. One hundred new pence pronounced pee makes up one pound at the Bank of England.
Pennies are predecimal currency. Twelve pennies to the shilling, 20 shillings to the pound. ergo 240 pennies to the pound sterling.
Fractions are lovely too- two ha'pennies prounced hay-pennies make up one penny, or four farthings make one penny also. Farthings had a pictur eof a robin on them, and were about the size of a new five pee.

since decimalisation in 1973 the penny is the smallest unit of currency
immediately prior to that (the L.S.D days there was a halfpenny coin, the farthing (quarter of a penny) which was withdrawn in the early sixties)
