Hi,
I think it's great you want to basketball! I played ball for many years and went to basketball camp over the summer to improve my skills. The best players master the fundamental skills of basketball. These include dribbling, defense, boxing out, setting picks, bounce passes, crisp layups, moving away from the ball (getting yourself open on offense when the ball is not in your hands), passing the ball, finding open man, etc...

This may all sound like a lot, but once you learn the fundamentals it becomes 2nd nature to you on the court and you can focus on being a good teammate and scoring some points.

Check out the following sites for some help:

Good luck. If you have questions feel free to email me at mward7@yahoo.com.
I'll be glad to offer coaching tips!

Use to play as well done some coaching myself, first you must determine which position suits your style of play first, with your driving and dribbling ability it sounds like guard may be your first choice but this position takes leadership ability and the ability to recongnize for its you that determines which play the offense runs accordingly to the defense your opponent is using. Don't forget to work on the most important aspect of the game as well and that is freethrows, please work on this and strive to improve and strong freethrow shooter makes for a very confident ballplayer that is not afraid to take it inside against the bigger players in efforts to draw fouls putting your opponent at a disadvantage and your team the advantage. Your coach help you discover which position best suits you keep your head up and good luck. Also take a ball using a regular court place a ball and using your hand slide the ball as you work feetwork this improves your leg strenght, on defense you want to remain low as possible . Take a jump rope and jump rope as much as possible, then keep doubling the rope and jump consistently, this help improveyour feetwork (rythm) and leaping abilities as well. One on one is always helpful but try to pick on someone you know is much more skilled than you, you'll eventually improve as you continue playing one on one with more skillful players as yourself.

it depends on what position you are trying to play. For starters shoot. Jumpers, catch and shoot, practice coming off a pick and pull up, and always, shoot free throws. " Free throws win the game". Run lines, you know where you run from the baseline to the free throw, touch it with your hand and back to the baseline, then to halfcourt and so on...Running is the best conditioning, if you can out run your defender, you will get easy points. Practice your defensive shuffle, for anything else just ask the coach you will be trying out for, its a good idea because he\she will see that you are willing to work hard and thats sometimes better then skill itself.
