The one whom I am fairly familiar with who was "outed" is Oscar Wilde. He brought a defamation of character suit against the Marquis of Queensbury and it was turned topsy-turvy against him instead. And he received a harsh jail sentence with forced labor for it, too, if I am not mistaken.

lynnemaryireland,
It was probably someone who thought that he had nothing to fear. I'lll bet it's not recorded, but I can think back and Caligula was a sort of hedonist, if I remember right.
But If you go back to Sodom, that was a place reputed to have had that practice, though their judgement was more along the lines of how they veiwed God and thus fell into other practices, like the treatment of strangers. I think that it was the Book of Jasher that had more details on that. They hated homeless people, and would even make laws against giving them anything.
Another thing; I was having a discussion about Homosexuality and the Bible with someone who was canvinced that there wasn't anything in there about God being against homosexuality. As I checked his (he was posing as an attractive woman online) scriptures that he pointed out, and he did have a point! There was typically a connection to heathen ritual associated with the hebrew words that those words are associated to sodomy. And over the years, sodomy meant more than just anal sex! It meant anything other than vaginal sex with a woman.
That was Burning Riot. I had hoped to find him here. I guess if he is, then he is using another name. He has a very direct analytical style, and would be of great benefit to this site. I think that I would recognize his style if he were to show up here.

I think you have to think ancient cultures. We all know that homosexuality, or gay love, was tolerated in ancient Greece. Homer wrote about Achilles, who was gay, and Homer is said to have composed the Iliad in pre-historic times.
Another early gay was Alexander the Great, who although married to the princess Roxana was much fonder of his Persian slave boy. I really don't know if we have reason to believe that Ancient Greece was much different in this respect from the surrounding cultures. My feeling is that gay love was pretty much tolerated throughout the Ancient World and that it only became a matter for social opprobium with the Romans and the rise of the monotheistic religions.

I can't believe the rubbish that is spouted on this website, thinly disguised as answers.
Please will contributors stop making up answers and either research the answer or leave well alone.
Homosexuality is as old as man/woman, the question is irrelevant.
Oscar Wilde most certainly did NOT come out. He was married with children, hugely popular with the masses. He was accused of having homosexual relations with another man and pleaded NOT GUILTY: hardly a "coming out" ! There is a big difference between being caught out and coming out. How times have changed for the better !!

I think it was more of a group thing, what with the police constantly raiding gay hangouts and the ilk. So many people were caught in more than one club, bar, bath house, etc, that everyone just KNEW. They didn't even really have to come out, they were dragged out... by the cops... naked.

In ancient Greece, homosexuality was the norm between leaders. emperors and rulers, because it was deemed a 'noble' thing and showed a close issue of trust between the two.
It set them aside from the lower classes who had to do with being straight.

From the Holy Koran it says about a community of people called "Sadum" or in English term is "Sodom". They lived as gays and lesbians and Allah Taala sent his prophet named Luth to forced them to stop those things. Sadly, they addicted with themselves and one day, Allah sent two angels to meet Luth and they told Luth to take his obedient followers leaved that city.
The worst thing is, both angels appeared as two most beautiful men that they ever seen and this is the test from Allah to them. Of course, they're too eager to rape both of them without knowing that they're angels.
After Luth and his followers leaved the city far beyond, the angels gone and bring the heavy storm and earthquake by the permission of Allah the Almighty. Lastly, Allah Taala pulled up the city from the Earth and make it upside down. Now, as we can see, nowadays... that city turn as the "Dead Sea"

The first gay person in history I can think of is the Greek poet Sapfo. She was presumably a lesbian/bi, she was born on the island Lesbos, therefor the term "Lesbian".
