Yes, good fertile soil is the best key to healthy plants. At the same time it is "nitrogen" that gives plants growth. When buying a ferilizer there are three numbers listed on it. The first is for nitrogen. If that number is the biggest of the three it is designed for growth of the plant.

I will give you a tip to remember what number does what for what you want a plant to do.
Remember this:
"Lettuce"," Tomatoes",and " Potatoes",
Associate each of these vegies to the numbers on the fertilizer in the same order.

The first number grows vegetation, like lettuce.

The second number helps to produce a fruit, a vegie , or a flower on that plant.

The third number helps to create roots and vegies etc, below the ground.

Plants need all three to be healthy but change the ferilizer to the right number for what you are trying to produce when that time is right. Example , you need a good and healthy plant before flowers or vegies like tomatoes would be expected. First number for growth and third number for strong root systems. Then if wanted go for the higher second number to start producing flowers or furits.

This sounds rather corny but know that it is a very easy way to remember which higher amount of nutrition is needed for what you want your plant to do or produce. Now I have let my secret out for the whole world. The good rich soil is important though too. Hope this helps you.
