Can we leave and not have things fall apart? Hell, things are already falling apart all around us. The only difference is if our boys are getting killed or not. A recent poll showed that 4 out of 5 Iraqis support the attacks on the American troops. If the country isn't ready to rebuild and move on, I say we get the hell out and support our troops by not getting them killed.

The mess in Iraq can't be compared to any other place where we've fought. The reason is that even now while we're still there, the Shiites and the Sunnis are slaughtering each other by the hundreds. Both sides are hoping America will soon pull out. The Sunnis have been in power in Iraq for a long time under Saddam, their dictator. They would love to get back in and put their man in Saddam's place.
If we pull out, and a civil war breaks out between the two factions ( and it sure will ) the two denominations of Islam from the surrounding countries would jump in the help their side. Other nations, like Israel could be dragged in to the fight. After that - - who knows ?

It's possible, but doubtful.
The comparison is the Philippines. We fought a 12 year insurgency there in the early 1900s. The Philippinos were already used to Spanish-style government and institutions (somewhat), but Iraq is not.
Add to this the fact that Iraqis see the U.S. as puppets of Israel (whom they hate with a passion), and the fact that the rest of the Middle East is willing to throw in with Iraq to keep out the West; it may not be a winnable situation.
The only solution may be a total, brutal conquering of the entire country. There's no way a modern democracy like the U.S. could carry that out.

I hope we can exit, but no I don't think things will stabilize. Not any time soon.
Why do we repeat the same mistakes? We joined with Stalin to defeat Hitler - we needed his help, but afterward we let him terrorize Europe. We gave aid to Saddam Hussein and others who now have come back to haunt us. Why do we do it? Why do we let history repeat itself? Maybe you can ask this question more intelligently and get some answers. Are we another version of Wile E. Coyote?
I mean this question I bring up - not yours that I have no answer for.

There's always an exit. There may be consequences, but I wouldn't say there isn't an exit. We left Vietnam and we're okay. Several years from now we will be reading this in our childrens history books.
