I know that snakes are able to see in infared and that they have a very keen sense of smell but what allows then to see in infared? If we want to see in infared we need special goggles to do so. Please answer and thanks for looking! Feel free to check out any of my other questions!

Pit vipers and a few other species of snakes can detect the heat living animals give off because they have pits on the side of their faces, specialized organs, that make this seeing of the infrared possible. I was reading about this on a website just the other day but do not recall the web address to include as a link. Here we go, I found it. It's pit vipers and boa constrictors and they call it thermal vision.

Heat sensing pits on their noses form an infrared picture on their brain-I don't think they actually see with their eyes like they do on TV shows.

Good question!
