My appications on the computer take FOREVER to load up. Even when I was just trying to get on the internet browser it took like 2-3 minutes. It usually just opens instantly. That's why I think it's a virus of some sort...
Anyway, do you know what virus scanner that would be best for this?
Or if it's not a virus, what could be the problem?

It sounds like spyware but it could be a virus.

either way scan it to weed out any potential threats and if that doesn't work restore it to an earlier date when you didn't have this problem

This could be from your computer runnng too many programs at once - sometimes we are not aware that a program has failed to close, and also lose track of what programs are running. And of course it could be a virus. You should have an anti-virus program installed.

First, though, find out how many programs you have running in the background. Right click the task bar at the bottom, and choose task manager. A box will come up, and the running programs will be listed. XP has by default a lot of "services" running, and the system has applications running. You should concentrate on the programs that do not say service or system.

Except for explorer.exe, a necessary windows feature, and the service and system labeled items, end each running program, especially any that show a large number for Mem Usage. Then see what this does for your performance. Vhances are that it will improve dramatically.

So then, go to start, run, type msconfig and hit enter. On the startup tab, uncheck items that are starting [and runnng] when windows starts - some you might want to run on start up, like an anti-virus program. Don't worry, you can always go back and check the items that you feel you need to run on start up...doing this will give you more performance.

Another big problem is a lot of spyware. Type Lavasoft AdAware in the search field in google and go to that site and search for the FREE version of this software and install it, and run it, and remove all the critical items it finds. That also will boost performance, if you have a lot of spyware.

And finally, get an anti-virus software and run that. A very good one is Antivir which you can get for free here:

First of all go to this site and get this anti-virus. Remember only to have one anti-virus at a time on the computer. http://www.avast.com/

There is also a on line one here: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Also make sure you go to Internet options in IE (Internet Explorer) and remove all the cookies and old Internet files. Good luck!

Also make sure it is not spy ware. Again have only one spy ware program. Here is one:http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Good luck!
