The Ring, Original Japanese Version. All these Hollywood films just don't cut it when compared to this (especially that remake) That whole film scares the bejesus out of me, because the storyline and acting is so superb and it absolutely didn't have or need any big special effects. I am a 220lb rugby playing Nurse, I have seen I forget how many Dead bodies (in various states) and have worked in morgues, but I watched this film from behind a book. this film I believe is based on old Japanese ghost stories.
Even though it has subtitles you should give it a go.
(I have been working the last 4 years in Germany so sorry for any punctuation errors)

Don't know bout recently, but Jaws when the head pops out the hull at Richard Dreyfuss is a peach.
Also Pet Cemetery, the make of the Steven King Novel, which in the most is hilariously scary. I saw it in the moviewwith me mammy, she squished a whole bag of popcorn and an ex large cola all over the guy beside her... Cat comes back to life, things start going wrong. Especially liked the bit where he snogs his back from the dead wife......

I agree, no scary movies anymore, but of the scariest given in the above answers, Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake with Jessica Biel was pretty good, The Ring 2 was NOT scary, but the first Ring was scarier...

An Inconvenient Truth made me have nightmares for days afterward--and the scariest part of all is the fact that it's all true!

im afraid horror films just are'nt that scary anymore. Im a horror fanatic and i keep waiting to find the film that will actually make me terrified!
Saw 2 was hideously, realisticly gorey (way better than the first)
Devils rejects was good for 'real' f***ed up psycos
....nope, you've really stumped me...
(and as for jeepers creepers, god awful! had potential up to the point u saw the creature thing, then it just became laughable!)

28 days later. Its not only scary it screws with your mind. The emptiness of London, the zombies, the fact that if there was an epidemic Britain probably would be quarantied.
OR The RING (the japanese original not the U.S one)
The Grudge?

Don't look now - fantastic film - keeps you on the edge of your seat all the way through - has the most amazing ending and is of course famous for 'that' scene with Julie Christie/ Donald sutherland - did they/ didn't they?

The Descent.
It's builds up and you know everything's going to get worse.. the whole premise is scary anyway (caves underground), the characters are normal and completely believeable, and the ending is both nasty and surprising. Really scared me.
