My dog took a bite out of my box turtle, tearing off part of its shell. Unfortunately there are no available vets near me. I called everywhere and one vet did give me instructions on how to care for the wound. I forgot to ask about pain medicine. Is there anything I can give my turtle to help w/ her pain? Thanks.

There are some reptile vets that will give pain medication- but here's the problem...
No one is certain if it works or not.
The problems that reptiles nervous system is made differently from ours, so pain meds may or may not have the right 'nerve endings' (receptor sites) in a turtle.

Shell damage can heal, depending on how deep the wounds are. What you don't want to see is moving pink stuff pokin gout of the upper shell- thats lungs...

Make sure you keep your turtles environment super clean.

Have you by any chance ever tried acupuncture? I have scoliosis (but not spina bifida) and acupuncture has helped me with back pain management. The advantage is that you would not be putting any chemicals in your system and there are no bad side effects (just some unexpected ones like euphoria). It may or may not work for you, but you might want to try it before escalating your meds. Acupuncture has a long and honored tradition of successful treatment in Asia; they even use it to replace anesthesia in sugery.

Turtles are incredibly resistant to a lot of drugs- as far as we know, this includes pain killers. When you figure that they eat poisonous mushrooms all the time, this makes a lot of sense.

As far as pain, boxies routinely put up with a lot of pain and horrible injuries that they recover from with apparently no liingering effects.

it wont be in pain as their shells dont have nerves in,my tortoise broke its shell a long while ago and was fine as long as it doesnt go deep and break the skin underneath
