Advertisement revenue is the main revenue stream or only revenue
stream for most TV shows. The better the ratings for the TV show,
the more they can charge for commercial time. That's why the
SuperBowl can charge so much for their ad time slots. They
also can make money through direct to home sales in terms
of DVDs of seasons or episodes, licensed merchandise,
syndication is huge, once the show reaches a certain number
of episodes, episodes except from the most current season,
can be shown again on TV.

Tv shows make money by ratings and commercials.....for instance the superbowl
For every television houseld that it is watched in it gets a certain amount of revenue through television stations.
Commercials....must pay top dollar to the mfl and television company to have their spot aired..
Which means the higher rated the show the more it costs to have something aired during break time...which means more money goes to the show and the station that produces it.

Also in the case of HBO/Showtime Etc. the shows are paid for with the subscription fees of the channel which is why they cost more to get but do not have 16 minutes of commercials for every hour of air time.
a lot of shows are also going the Product placement route, which is why CSI Miami will always make sure that we not only see the Hummer's that they drive, but that we always see the Hummer logo at least once an episode

Commercial airtime. The commercials generate money. The higher the rating the more the commercials cost and the more money they generate towards their budget from the network. Low viewing = low commercial sales which gets you canceled.
So reality TV shows seem to be generating lots of cash by using interactive methods such as selling Internet access to backstage information. They also have interactive text message voting where I am sure they generate cash from the "text surcharge".

well like direct tv (or cable u no those stuff) will pay the show to be put on their tvs. so whatever type of tv (cable, direct, ect) u have, the brand is just paying for all those channels to be put on their tv, and that money will go to the shows.
and then the type of tv u have (cable, direct, ect) will charge u like double the amount that they r paying, so they get money.
make sense?
also advertisment!

The money is generated by the commercials that are sold in that time slot. If the show is popular, the ads sell for much more money (ex. superbowl ads are tremendously expensive).
