It's not only okay, but it's important that you leave anyone who's abusive. Love is not supposed to hurt.
Get the law involved. File a report on her. I don't care if she is blaming it on hormones. Everyone is in control of their own actions.
Also, don't just leave her alone with the child. If she treats you this way, imagine her being left with the baby!, especially if she develops post partum depression!
Seek custody of the baby. If you have police reports against her that will work in your favor.
I have seen what happens to children who live with an abusive parent. Protect yourself and your baby.

What are you doing to trigger the hits??? I urge you to stay with your wife, love her, and get her the help she needs. There's a bundle of help out there, if you look in the right places. Also, don't use this as a cop out to your marriage. Your son needs you to help his mother make a home, where everyone gets the love and protection he or she needs. Your marriage is worth fighting for. It is priceless, especially your children. I know! My parents divorced when I was 8 years old. It left me scarred for life.
Know you're not alone. Many parents are staying in a marriage that is a lot less than ideal, for the sake of their children. They'll be grown and gone before you know. Then you may still consider leaving, if you've done everything in your power to make a better marriage.

"...and let her raise our son."
Okay, now I know you're lying about something. Why is she hitting you? Are you threatening her? Do you work? Does she need psychiatric help for dealing with stress and anger? Does she have many hormone shifts and any support through them?
If you really thought she was a "danger" to anyone, you wouldn't consider leaving your unborn son with her when you leave. I'm not a therapist, but I find it interesting the only time she is attempting to hit you is when she knows a man should definitely not try to hit her back.... I wonder what else is going on in your home.

If she hits you, she's going to beat the heck out of your sweet, helpless little baby. Imagine it: the baby is crying because that's just what babies do sometimes, and it gets frustrating-she can't control herself with you, so chances are she'll really go off on your baby. And that's dangerous. I say YOU take custody of the baby or stay with her so you can protect your child. PLEASE don't leave her because then your poor, helpless baby will have a really sad, helpless life. That baby needs you for protection. This is making me cry just thinking about it....
