I'm thinking of buying a laptop / notebook in the UK. I have about £500 to spend, and I want to use it for storing photos, videos, music. It must be able to connect to my wireless network.

get something u can cherish, an asset; not a liability !

< other models from dell itself, under £400, which can just about serve u'r purpose, but u wont enjoy working on them, i mean the inspirion 1300., £349 to be precise ! >

also the inspirion 6400 is priced £498 Includes VAT & Shipping
but screen is 15.4" & hence portability is greatly reduced, else system is good !

Go to Dixons, Currys or PC World and pick up a Packard Bell. They are available for under £400 now.

goto Dell website, you will find many INSPIRION series of laptops which come under £500. I bet they are good for word processing and net surfing and of course to some extent music.
