India will have difficulty ever becoming a superpower for several reasons:

1. Religious Conflict - India has a long history of religious violence. Even Gandhi could do little to quell this. Muslims, Hindus, and Sikhs harbor many grudges and cause much conflict. The conflict alrady caused the new countries of Pakistan and Bangladesh. There is also much conflict within the Hindu community about untouchables.

2. Political Conflict - Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and China all have long-standing conflict with India, mostly over land or religious reasons.

3. Economy - India may have a large electronics sector, but much of the country is Socialist/Communist. New influx of companies/incestment is slow and many companies are leaving India because wages are rising. Their best minds get schooling elsewhere and stay there.

4. Poverty - The poverty rate in India is staggering and many live in the streets.

5. Population - India has the second-highest population in the world and it is climbing fast. It is pacing to outgrow China in a decade. The economy is not growing fast enough to support this and will drive the country into further poverty.

No harm in dreaming but....
India cannot be a Superpower until the poor can afford water, food, shelter, education, medicine and job.
A country which cannot handle common man's problem like HIV, corruptions, cronism, poverty, prostitution, cheap/child labour, standard of living and health care cannot become a Superpower nor for that matter can be called as a developing country either. This is the idea- long as "the richer become more richest and poorer become poorest"- how can this ambition of super power come true?

It still has a long way to go, as the country has a huge divide between its urban centers, which are booming and becoming more advance pretty quickly, and the countryside, which lacks infrastructure and is culturally not ready for modernizing. with one billion citizens, its certianly a rising regional power, though it won't be able to commpete with China, or much less the United
States in the near future.
